Transgender Woman Sues Tennessee Over Refusal to Update Driver’s License Sex Marker

A transgender woman in Tennessee, identified in her complaint as Jane Doe, sued Gov. Bill Lee and Department of Safety and Homeland Security Commissioner Jeff Long over the state’s refusal to change the sex marker on her driver’s license despite her amended Illinois birth certificate. The lawsuit alleges the policy, tied to a 2023 law defining sex by anatomy and genetics at birth, violates the 14th Amendment and the Constitution’s Full Faith and Credit clause. The ACLU of Tennessee filed a similar challenge to the license restrictions in 2024.
